The Literacy Framework

The Literacy Framework was introduced in 1996. It is a 'slimmed down' version of the Literacy Hour. Literacy is included in the timetable daily throughout primary schools.

It is divided into 4 sections

Section1

  • Whole class working on a shared text

Pupils participate in studying the text. The teacher starts the lesson and uses it to model effective reading or writing

Section 2

  • Word level or sentence level work

This part of the lesson is to teach and consolidate phonic knowledge The children can then apply this in their reading and writing or on spelling or sentence construction .

Section 3

  • Independent work

Pupils apply their literacy skills in meaningful tasks individually, in pairs or in groups. During this time the teacher works with small groups to improve specific skills through guided reading or writing. This section usually lasts for twenty minutes.

Section 4

  • Plenary session

This is the time where the children develop what they have learnt. Finally the teachers and children reflect on and assess what has been learnt.
