Feeding baby

There is a great deal of press coverage at this moment in time on obese children (and adults!). The best plan is to start children on the foods that you think are good for them.

If possible do try and breast feed your baby. It is natural and a great way to bond mother and baby. It saves time in sterilising, money in buying equipment and milk and it is so much handier. Do not despair if you find that breast feeding does not work for you. It is not essential. Your baby will survive. Some mothers find it a real struggle so please talk to your midwife who will help and offer professional advice.

Babies usually have some solid food after five months old. This depends on the weight of your baby, the advice of your Health Visitor and on you. There are proprietary products on the market which are labelled according to the appropriate age range. Some of these are excellent but please read the small print.

Check:

  • The added E numbers
  • The sugar content
  • The added salt content
  • Any ingredients to which your baby may be allergic

Remember your baby needs water to drink and may enjoy fruit drinks. Check with your dentist about the sugar content in fruit drinks….babies' bottles should really only be used for baby milk and water…..think of those little teeth developing.

Fresh fruit, vegetables and some meat or fish can be liquidised at home and then you have complete control of exactly what your baby eats. This can be the same as you and save you time and money!
