Literacy - worksheets

Literacy is the understanding of creating an article in the written word. This can be either handwritten or in an electronic format. The understanding of punctuation in both formats is essential. This includes full stops, commas and capital letters on to more complex forms of punctuation. 
Books for reading aloud and Books to help with phonics as well as Phonic games, toys and software will reinforce learning and are a useful guide for adults to use with young children.

Using a dictionary

Some children find working with a dictionary baffling. There are so many learning points in discovering the sequencing of the alphabet that the sooner it is started the better. Grammar (Understanding English KS2) by Carol Matchett 

Understanding English is a series of learning workbooks, each of which features explanations, teaching points, exercises, answers and 'Now you try!' extension activities to ensure that learning is secure. With the new SATS focus on grammar, spelling and punctuation, this is an invaluable series for reinforcing and familiarising with those key skills. This is a complete course in grammar and makes an excellent reference guide. Examples and activities provide practice in building sentences effectively and  the book includes: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, prepositions, connectives, conjunctions, phrases/clauses and direct/reported speech. The book includes a variety of different approaches, allowing parents and teachers to choose the best for their children. Additionally there is some fascinating background information about the English language.

Spelling (Understanding English KS2) by Carol Matchett

This book describes a variety of spelling strategies, including learning how to spell specific words, remembering spelling rules and checking for mistakes. Fascinating facts about the development of English spelling, plus plenty of activities and examples, make this a very useful book to support learning. It includes: letter strings, letter rules, syllables and compound words; homophones, prefixes and suffixes. The layout is easy to follow and the work can be done in short 'chunks' so children do not get bored. An attractive book which makes good use of colour, drawings, cartoons and diagrams to make the topic approachable and understandable. It includes reading strategies, non-fiction texts/poetry, story planning and spelling/punctuation/handwriting. This is a guide to the techniques, although each page does include a 'test yourself' box - Schofield and Sims practice books are invaluable to reinforce learning.
 

Key Stage 2 English Practice Papers by Carol Matchett 

As your child gets closer to the SATS test reinforce their learning and identify any areas of weakness by doing practice papers. These four papers are created in the format of the actual papers, so give children an ideal preparation. Being used to the format also increases confidence when they sit down to do the tests. The books feature full instructions and detailed mark schemes, together with tables that give an indication of the level at which the child is working. Each section is cross-referenced to the Key Stage 2 English Revision Guide (above).
