Reading Even before children learn to speak they are introduced to books through enjoying colourful pictures. This learning process is then transferred to deciphering the written word. Spot the Dog and Topsy and Tim are stimulating and colourful books which increase vocabulary, stimulate imagination and create a love for reading.

Spelling Phonics and spelling need to be linked together. It is always useful to children to listen to the sound of the letters in the word to help the spelling. There are many spelling patterns and rules which children find useful in helping them to spell correctly. Try some of these in the papers below.

Comprehension Comprehension is an integral part of understanding and interpreting all the idiosyncracies of language. This includes spelling, meanings of words and interpreting the ideas of different authors. It is best to start with easy traditional stories as everyone has their own thoughts on, for example, Little Red Riding Hood!

Writing To enable children to write imaginative stories they need to increase their vocabulary, learn to read well and know how to plan a story. This doesn't always happen overnight, so be patient and persevere!

Grammar English grammar and punctuation are needed for written English and needs to be understood, explained and practised as it can get lost in the various methods of communication today.
Punctuation

Poetry Poetry is one of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of the English language, and children can have great fun writing their own poems - with a little help!.

Revision It's always a good idea to periodically do a suitable revision paper with children to ascertain areas of uncertainty and to reinforce learning. It often makes your child feel good.
Best New Books We have fantastic new section on recommended reads, which brings together some super new books from a wide range of publishers. All aspects of English can be improved by regular reading, so encourage your child to choose and read books of all types.
Best wishes
