Books to help with phonics

These are some suggestions for books to help your child to learn to read with phonics and to enjoy books

Four Freckled Frogs
by Ruth Thompson
A book about consonant blends (fr, sc, mp, nk etc). Each sound has a page with a colour picture full of objects and activities using it; a sentence about the picture and questions. There are small pictures round the main picture and a word list at the end of the book.
The cat in the hat by Dr Seuss
The wonderfully anarchic Cat in the Hat is one of the most popular characters in children's fiction, and this book is ideal for budding readers to tackle on their own.
Hot fox by Dick Crossley
Ladybird has developed a phonic reading scheme. This story is designed to help children have fun learning the relationship between a letter, or a group of letters, and the sound it makes.
Big pig on a dig by Phil Roxbee Cox
The books in this new series combine a phonics-based text with a funny story. They are aimed at beginner readers.
Jolly Phonics Wall chart
Put this wall chart up to decorate your child's room and help your child learn the words and sounds at the same time!

Plenty of worksheets across a broad spectrum. I am a home educator and being able to dip into good quality resources like this is excellent. - K.C.
